QUACKERY IN NURSING, THE CAUSES, EFFECTS AND CONTROL MEASURES: THE NIGERIA EXPERIENCE

Quackery is a crime that is gradually becoming a norm in nursing practice in Nigeria; the population of quacks in nursing keeps growing daily despite all done to curb this criminal act leading to bastardization of nursing profession, creating a wrong image in the minds of people and also putting the life of many patients in the hospitals at risk in the country. The main objective of this paper is to explore the causes, effects, and control measures of quackery in nursing within Nigeria. The concept of quackery and it implications on the populace was reviewed. Also, the difference between a nurse and a quack practicing nursing was examined. Quackery practices in hospitals in Nigeria especially the private hospitals were noted to be the bane of nursing profession in Nigeria. Individuals involved in quackery have not only caused harm but have also led many citizens to untimely deaths due to their unprofessional conduct. The study recommends stringent enforcement of regulatory laws by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, as well as targeted government intervention in private hospitals to reduce the incidence of quackery. In conclusion, addressing quackery in nursing requires immediate and coordinated action from regulatory bodies and government agencies to preserve the integrity of the nursing profession in Nigeria.
