PERCEIVED SOCIO-CULTURAL AND ECONOMIC DETERMINANTS OF TEENAGE PREGNANCY AMONG RESIDENTS OF JERE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA BORNO STATE, NIGERIA

problem that affects both developed and developing
countries. Understanding the determinants and
reducing teenage pregnancy is central to achieving
sustainable development goals. This study investigated
the perceived socio-cultural and socio-economic
determinants of teenage pregnancy among residents of
Jere Local Government Area in Borno State. The design
of this study is Cross-sectional survey and was
conducted in Jere local government of Borno State, and
multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 384
household leaders. The data was collected using a
structured and validated questionnaire. Mean, standard
deviation, and simple percentage were used for data
analysis. The socio-demographic characteristics of this
study reveals that majority of the respondents are male
(57.3%), within the ages of 21-28 years (52.1%), single
(57.3%) and are in school (98.4%). Also, majority had
knowledge about sex and pregnancy (98.4%) including
re c e i v i n g c o m m u n i t y e n l i g h t e n m e n t a b o u t
contraceptives (70.8%). Further ndings observed that
the perceived socio-cultural determinants of teenage
pregnancy among residents of Jere Local Government
Area in Borno State, include Polygamous family
( c=3.74), Social media ( c=` ` 3.68), Child-parent
communication (`c=3.67), Multiple sexual partners
(`c=3.60), Parent desire for grandchildren (`c=3.60),
Lack of parental guidance (`c=3. 54), Level of
education (`c=3.49), Decline in moral discipline in
society (`c=3.49), Societal belief (`c=3.47), Child
marriage (`c= 3.46), Coerced sex (`c=3.46), Peer
group inuence (`c=3.44). Finally, this study indicates
that perceived socio-economic determinants of teenage
pregnancy among residents of Jere Local Government
Area in Borno State are Poverty(`c=3.51), Illiteracy
(`c=3.43), Non-use of contraceptives (`c=3.34),
Living in low socio economic residence (`c= 3.28),
School dislike (`c=3.27), Parental separation or
divorce (`c= 3.26), Undiagnosed depression or anxiety
(`c=3.21). In conclusion, the determinants of teenage
pregnancy are multifaceted therefore teenagers should
be exposed to sex/family life education which
encourages the development of responsible attitudes
toward sexual behavior.
