FACTORS INFLUENCING THE UPTAKE OF OGUN STATE HEALTH INSURANCE BENEFIT PACKAGE IN OGUN STATE, NIGERIA

This study examined the factors influencing the uptake of the Ogun State Health Insurance Benefit Package (OGSHIBP) among heads of households in selected communities in Ogun State, Nigeria. A cross-sectional design was used, and 299 participants were selected using Leslie Kish’s formula and multi-stage sampling. The instrument used for this study is questionnaire and out of the 299 distributed, 280were retrieved and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics (Pearson Product Moment Correlation) at a 5% significance level. The majority of respondents were aged 40–50 years (45%), had secondary education (38.6%),were Muslims (52.9%), and of Yoruba ethnicity (83.5%). Most of the respondents are traders(26.4%) with average monthly incomes above 50,000 (38.6%). The study revealed a low uptake of the health insurance benefit package, with only 47% enrolled. Key interpersonal factors influencing uptake included advice and stories from relatives ( = 3.48), empathetic healthcare provider attitudes ( = 3.36), social media information ( = 3.17), and experiences of friends ( = 3.08). Organizational factors affecting uptake were poor service quality ( = 4.20), inadequate facility equipment ( = 4.18), good nurse-patient relationships ( =4.11), organizational policies( =3.82), long waiting times ( = 3.58), and the availability of sufficient health facilities ( = 3.58). A significant association was found between occupation only and insurance uptake (X² = 14.88,P=0.01).The study concludes that increased public awareness, simplified registration processes, and policies that encourage shared decision-making between healthcare providers and participants are essential to improving health insurance enrolment in Ogun State.
