BIOPHYSICAL INDICES AS PREDICTORS OF DIABETES RISK AMONG NURSES IN A TERTIARY HOSPITAL IN OGUN STATE NIGERIA

Nurses, due to the nature of their work-related activities, often do not engage in health-promoting behaviors, predisposing them to the risk of developing diabetes. The purpose of this study was to assess the biophysical indices as predictors of diabetes risk among nurses in the teaching hospitals in Ogun state. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the teaching hospitals in Ogun state. Sociodemographic and behavioral, physical, and biochemical measurements were collected from 252 nurses using a modified World health organization (WHO) STEPS Instrument for Chronic Disease Risk Factor Surveillance. Data collected were subjected to descriptive analysis and inferential statistics using SPSS version 23. The sociodemographic characteristics of this study indicated that majority of the participants are within the ages of 32 to 34years (29%), females (94%), married (65.5%) and Christians (92.4%). The participants have >15 years of experience and their designation is Chief Nursing Officer (30.2%). The result of this study showed that the biophysical profile of Nurses indicates that majority of Nurses has a body mass index of ≥ 18.5-24.9 kg/m2(32.5%) and ≥25 to 29.9kg/m2 (30.2%) with waist circumference of >88cm for females and >102cm for males (59.5%), systolic blood pressure of<120mmHg (40.9%), diastolic blood pressure of <80mmHg (57.5%), physical activities of 1-2times per week (55.6%) and Dietary Habit of eating fruits and vegetables 3 or more times per week (54%). This study also noted that majority of the nurses are Normoglycemic (76.2%) and the biophysical indices that were significant predictors of diabetes risk among participants are Systolic Blood Pressure ß= 0.263, t (244) = 3.478, p = 0.000 and Dietary Habits ß= -0.148 t (244) = -2.350, p = 0.020 respectively, with both explaining a significant proportion of variance in 2 diabetes risk, Adj R =0.051,F (7,244)=2.932, p=0.006. In conclusion, the result of this study shows that systolic blood pressure and dietary habits are the only biophysical indices that are predictors of diabetes risk among nurses in the teaching hospitals in Ogun state therefore nurses should be encouraged onlifestylemodicationstoreducediabetesrisk
